Wellness Coaching provides holistic support for individuals' and family well-being through the lenses of social, emotional, physical and mental health and wellness.
It aims to learn more about individuals in order to provide guidance, support to achieve short and long term goals, and facilitate access to other relevant community supports. Aimed to break isolation and provide connection, it is delivered in either a one-to-one or group context.
Please note that Wellness Coaching is not a crisis or counselling service (treatment or management for a client with psychological distress such as suicidal impulses or destructive behaviour). Rather, the approach of these sessions is to provide participants with strategies and coping techniques so they can overcome challenges now, in the future, and to navigate relevant community resources.
Intake: As part of this first meeting, an intake form is completed to identify well-being concerns and goals, or areas of life that the client would like to action plan for improved life management and satisfaction.
Personalized Coaching Approach: By understanding clients’ well-being concerns, goals are established in partnership between coach and client. From there, the client is referred within the Family Resource Centre to the most appropriate wellness coach based on the presenting issues and goals.
Methods: A variety of tools and techniques are utilized include motivational interviewing, reframing strategies for combating negative thinking, open-ended questions on change, reflective listening, normalizing and readiness scaling.
Resource Navigation: During the identification of short and long term goals, the Wellness Coach will also assist with resource navigation to additional community resources, programs or relevant online options for addition information and support related to the presenting goal / issue.
Referral Navigation: It is easy to confuse a Wellness Coach with a Counsellor or a Therapist. This form of coaching does not mean to ‘diagnosis’ or ‘treat’ mental illness. Rather, it uses methods and learning from counselling and therapy, and focuses on assessment of current reality, issues and goals to plan for the future. Therapy and counselling often focus on the past to deal with current problems and issues. As part of Wellness Coaching, past history will be explored, for the purpose of having background and context to focus on the present status and future. Wellness Coaches support and recognize that coaching works effectively alongside counselling and therapy.
